Labour has published its manifesto for older people, announcing the new position of an Independent Commissioner for Older People in England. Miriam O’Reilly, former Countryfile presenter, has said she would welcome taking on this role.

The Tories have let down older people and will not stand up for them against powerful interests. Government dithering over acting on pension fees and charges has cost savers up to £750. Energy bills have risen by £300 since 2010, squeezing pensioner incomes.

Labour will always stand up for older people, building on our proud record of boosting their living standards. The last Labour government introduced Winter Fuel Payments, free TV licenses and bus passes, and helped half a million pensioners escape poverty.

A Labour government will triple lock the state pension so that it always rises by earnings, inflation or 2.5 per cent, whichever is highest. We will restrict winter fuel payments for the richest five per cent of pensioners as part of our plan to get the deficit down, but guarantee no further changes to winter fuel payments, free TV licenses, or free bus passes.
