We’re seeing a desperate Tory campaign that this week has spent a day defending tax avoidance and the next playing politics in the gutter. Today they are just making promises they have no plan to keep. No-one will believe a word of it.

These totally unfunded commitments are on top of all their existing unfunded commitments -; including £10bn of unfunded tax cuts. The result will be even higher spending cuts that will put the NHS at risk and lead to an inevitable increase in VAT. That’s the real offer from another Tory government.

In contrast Labour is setting out a better plan, with concrete changes we will deliver, from zero hours, ending non doms to neighbourhood policing. And every one is paid for.

The Tories’ announcement on rail fares is unfunded, uncosted and totally unbelievable. In August last year, the Tory transport Secretary attacked “unfunded spending” promises putting a £1.8bn figure on a fares freeze.

Over the last five years, the Tories have allowed rail fares to rise by 20 per cent on average since 2010 and services for hard -;pressed commuters to get worse. And the Tories were the ones who brought back ‘the flex’ which enabled the inflation busting fares rises since 2010.

Labour has been campaigning against the Tory inflation-busting rail fare hikes since 2010.

Labour’s better plan will see big changes on rail – action on fares, but also an end to the failed franchises, a public sector operator and for the first time a passenger voice to stop the rip-off railways that have defined David Cameron’s government.
