Wyre Forest Labour today reacted to the news that The Grange is set to close, barely 8 months after the Tories promised to keep it open after misleading voters with a campaign to save it, including with a petition, by calling the Tories “morally & politically bankrupt.’

Wyre Forest Labour Group Leader Nigel Knowles said ”The closure of The Grange is a disgraceful thing for the Tories to do. It provides a much needed service in Wyre Forest for vulnerable people which they will be denied if it closes. This is being done by Tories who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. The people of Wyre Forest will not forget.”

Wyre Forest Labour’s Stephen Brown was equally scathing of the Tory plans when he said “The Tories are morally and politically bankrupt. They deliberately hoodwinked local people into supporting a duplicitous campaign which they lead pretending to save The Grange. It was then announced they have saved it with a long term dementia unit plan and I quote ‘council chiefs voted in favour of retaining it to help cope with increasing demand for dementia services in the coming years’. The reasons for closing The Grange now will have been exactly the same in February. As it is, eight months later, it’s on a new Tory hit list for closure proving the Tories are liars. Not to belittle the terrible curse of dementia for those suffering and the family stress it causes, but the Tories must think the public are suffering with some kind of mass dementia too. Do they really think we’re going to just forget what happened 8 months ago? Maybe the whole of Worcestershire Tory Party is actually suffering from dementia. They should check themselves into the Grange, whilst it’s still open, and before they close it. Even if they did, they’ll never know, and never appreciate, the damage they are doing to the fabric and community support structures of our society with their reckless love of austerity. I wouldn’t be half surprised if WFDC Tories announced a rescue package using their capital funds which they are also spending like confetti and driving the council into massive debt, so they can take some temporary plaudits for it. We need a Labour Government and a Labour Council to start the massive task of rebuilding and reinvesting in our public services and communities. The Tories are finished. We know it, the public know it, the Tories just ain’t read that memo yet.”
