Candidate for St Barnabas and Franche & Habberley North

My name is Nigel Knowles. I am Finance Committee Chairman of Kidderminster Town Council, and a proud candidate for Worcestershire County Council and Kidderminster Town Council.

I started out working as a carpet weaver, before becoming Education Officer for a trade union in London. Now I am a successful publisher and author.

I have previously been Mayor of Kidderminster, Chairman of both Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council, and Chairman of Planning. As Chairman of Planning, I stopped the construction of the incinerator on the Sugar Beet site on Stourport Road. The site now provides housing and a leisure centre.

I have a lot of experience working with the local community in Kidderminster, and I am campaigning for services that the people living here need, like more local jobs, a Green New Deal, and a decent bus service.

Political Experience:
Since 1982, when I was elected to Haringey Borough Council, I have served on many different councils over a span of nearly 40 years, including Borough, District, County Council and Town Councils.

Years in Labour Party: 50 years

Occupation: Author, formerly Education Officer for a Trade Union, Carpet Weaver and Designer

For: The NHS is a great institution and one which many people hold very dear. I have fought hard over the years to defend the NHS from cuts and believe wholeheartedly in the principles of health care being given freely at the point of need and funded properly from taxation.

Against: Why is there poverty in our society? Over a million children go hungry every day in the UK and working families have to depend on Foodbanks and Universal Credit?

Greatest Achievement: One of my proudest achievements was to gain a degree as a mature student. As a councillor, I have been proud to represent local communities and being a voice for the people. Getting the incinerator rejected in Kidderminster as Chairman of WCC Planning Committee was a great achievement, as well as stopping housing developments on Green Belt land.
